A woman should be seen and not heard. Via her blog on a superfast broadband connection…
Who writes the ‘In A Different Voice’ blog?
That would be me, Jane. I’m an English thirty-something mum of three girls under five, including twins. I’m also a feminist, humanist and inconsistent lefty. In between managing a house full of barmy kids, I also have a long-standing interest in politics and gender issues, which I have a post-grad degree in.
While that may explain my quite specific interests, this is still an entirely personal blog, and I reserve the right to write loosely, poor researched opinion on whatever I like! Typos come for free; see them as a compliment to your superior intellect or excuse them because I’m busy, I’m easy either way.
Why did you start inadifferentvoice?
It’s my muse while I’m a stay-at-home mum, which is a lovely job to do as well as often being quite boring and repetitive. Writing is a welcome bit of grown-up head space when I spend all day singing nursery rhymes and explaining complex concepts such as ‘waiting’ and ‘now wash your hands’.
It started with no particular agenda but has slowly mutated into a combination of feminist/equality writing and personal blog. You’ll find a mixture of posts here ranging from discussions about feminist theory, to updates on pet projects or political campaigns, to sarcastic nonsense about pop culture, life and anything else that tickles my fancy!
I also occasionally make rather cool cakes. I’m not a crafter or a baker, but I do blog about them (and how to do it) if you’re interested in that sort of thing.
Please will you stop writing those god-awful poems?
Sorry, I’m afraid the poems are non-negotiable! Seriously, I can’t help it, it’s like an illness. I’ve even heard about things like metre, rhyme, and form, but just flagrantly ignore them. I’m not trying to sell a poetry book, I just like writing them. I do tag posts with them in as ‘crap poetry’ though, as a trigger warning lest they distress punctuation pedants.
Do you allow comments?
Yes, if you want to comment, engage, critique or debate that would be lovely and please do! Trolls or very rude people do get deleted though; life’s too short. If you like my posts feel free to link to my pages, but please don’t copy/paste my work elsewhere; it’s copyright and all that.
So now you’ve met me, feel free to have a browse and say hello
